NRI Tax Residency Status Checker

Find out if you're an NRI, RNOR, or Resident for the current Indian financial year based on your days of stay in India.

Days spent in India

Count every day you physically set foot in India, including the day of arrival and departure.

How Indian tax residency works

NRI: Fewer than 182 days in India in the current financial year (April–March). Only Indian-sourced income is taxable.

Resident: 182+ days in India, OR 60+ days AND 365+ days in the preceding 4 years. Global income is taxable — but DTAA treaties can prevent double taxation.

RNOR: A transitional status for returning NRIs — resident in the current year but NRI for 9 of the last 10 years. Foreign income stays largely exempt for 2–3 more years.
